Leading Wind

Built by Whisstocks Boatyard on the East coast in 1937, ‘Leading Wind’ is a Deben 4 Tonner.

In 2018, she was found in poor condition from neglect, by her current owner and local artist, Chris Wood. As the boat at one time belonged to Chris’s Mother, he decided to save Leading Wind from a sorry fate and approached us to help rescue her with a major refit.

Our substantial programme of works began with removing the boat from her ballast keel. All the bolts were found to be very badly wasted, so new ones were forged and fitted.

Once settled in our shed, patterns were made for new oak floors, garboards were replaced, then repairs were undertaken to the stem, stern post and aft end of the keelson. The top of the transom and one cabin side were also tended to.

She was successfully launched in time to take part in the 2019 Classic Boat Festival. Since then, we have maintained her on a regular basis with brightwork and paint tasks to keep her in ship shape.
